Patches for VTeX 6.x distribution
(Updated 4/10/99 ::: Current Version 6.30)
VTeX is an ongoing project and from time to time we
will be releasing improvements and corrections to the distribution (patches)
These patches are available free of charge to current VTeX users. In addition
to supplying these patches, we have other options on keeping your program
up-to-date.
To update you distribution, please make first make a note of what you have.
(The [About] dialog of WVTE will tell you this.) If you, for example, have
version 6.10 (and the latest is 6.11), you are one step behind. In this case,
you would probably want to get the 610to611 patch and apply it. If your current
version is 6.00, then you will need to get the 600to601, 601to602, and 602to610
patches [not all version numbers exists: there were no versions 6.03-6.09].
On the other hand, if you have 6.11, you are up to date, and
there is nothing of use on this page (yet).
Before getting the patches themselves, you may want to review the
current change list
(contains a very brief description of changes), and get one of the
programs used to perform the patch. The programs are
- patch16.exe -- the 16-bit patch to be used under DOS. Get it if
you are still using DOS and Windows 3.1.
- patch32.exe -- the 32-bit patch to be used with Win95 and Win/NT.
[under these systems you can use the 16-bit patcher as well].
You can download either of the patch tools from the menu below. All of these
files are .zip'ped, you will need to unpack them before using.
Notice that the change from 6.02 to 6.10 was very substantial and
involved changes and/or additions of about 40mb of data. The patch
provided here is only partial: it does not, for example, include
the EC font distribution, many other new fonts, the command-line HugeTeX
compiler, or rewritten documentation.
Now, you can download the appropriate patches. Please see a .rme
file within each .zip file for details.
To apply the patch programs (patch16 or patch32), you should
unpack the .vdf files (VDF stands for VTeX Delta Files) files into
the X:\VTEX\ subdirectory and switch there.
Befor applying the patch make sure to look at the supplied .rme
file for additional details, especially when updating from 6.02 to 6.10.
The general syntax of the patch command is
X:\VTEX> <patch-program> <patch-data>
For example, if you apply the 6.01 to 6.02 patch using the 16-bit patcher, enter:
X:\VTEX> patch16 601to602.vdf
Or, if you apply the 6.10 to 6.11 patch using the 32-bit patcher, enter:
X:\VTEX> patch32 610to611.vdf
Do not destroy the patch files after you apply them. Patches correct only the
installed distribution of VTeX and only the components that have been installed.
If you need to reinstall or install new components, you may need the patch files
again.
In addition to patches, from time to time, we'll be adding new installation
packages. These packages can be added to your distribution. Before downloading
and installing a package, please make sure that you have an up-to-date
distribution of VTeX---we anticipate that in most cases a new package will
require the most current VTeX. To install these additional packages, unzip
the downloaded files into a temporary directory and run WINSTALL.
